What is NBR O-Ring

Nitrile rubber (NBR) o-rings, also known as Buna-N, are one of the most commonly used sealing elastomers due to their resistance to petroleum-based fuels and lubricants and their relatively low price. Nitrile elastomers are copolymers of acrylonitrile and butadiene. (Learn why NBR is a popular choice). There are a number of common variations of nitrile compounds. Nitrile o-rings may also come in a metal-detectable variation while retaining the same qualities as the general Nitrile o-ring compound. For applications requiring o-rings with high visibility, High-Visibility Nitrile o-rings are recommended. High-Visibility o-rings maintain properties identical to its original compound, with the addition of a distinguishable neon green hue.

Benefits of NBR O-Ring

Oil Resistant

When sealing oil hoses and passages, you may want to use nitrile O-rings. They offer excellent resistance to oil. They won't damage or degrade. Even when directly exposed to oil over an extended period, nitrile O-rings will continue to seal the hose or passage with which they are used.

Heat Resistant

You don't have to worry about heat damaging nitrile O-rings. As an elastomer, nitrile can withstand hot temperatures. Some nitrile O-rings, in fact, can withstand temperatures of up to 135 degrees Celsius. For sealing applications in which heat is a concern, you may want to choose nitrile O-rings for their heat-resistant properties.

Readily Available

Nitrile O-rings are readily available. They are one of the most common types of O-rings. More O-rings are made of nitrile than any other elastomer. With their widespread, nitrile O-rings are inexpensive and easy to find, thus making them a popular choice among businesses.

Supports Compounding

Nitrile O-rings can be compounded. When compounded, the properties of nitrile O-rings will change. You can use compounding to increase their resistance to sunlight, for example. By default, nitrile O-rings boast a low level of protection against the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Compounding, though, will increase their UV protection. If you're planning to use them outdoors where they will be exposed to the sun, compounding can extend the life of your nitrile O-rings.

Chemical Resistant

Another benefit of nitrile O-rings is chemical resistance. They are highly resistant to chemicals. Like all O-rings, nitrile O-rings are typically used around the mating surfaces of hoses. These hoses may carry chemicals, such as fuel, oil or coolant. While chemicals may degrade other types of O-rings, they won't interfere with the function of nitrile O-rings. Nitrile O-rings will continue to seal the hose while preventing the chemical from leaking out of the hose.

Strong and Durable

You can rest assured knowing that nitrile O-rings are strong and durable. When exposed to heat and/or pressure, they will expand. As the heat and/or pressure goes away, they will contract. Under normal operations, nitrile O-rings will repeat these cycles without succumbing to damage.

Nitrile vs Silicone O Rings: How to Choose

Every industry uses O rings. Agriculture, food processing, manufacturing and engineering all depend on various types of O rings to keep equipment working well. The basic function of an O ring is as a sealing element to contain and protect liquid or gaseous materials inside a piece of equipment. Like all seals, the O ring keeps what is inside from escaping and what is outside from ingressing. Because they are used in so many diverse applications, O rings are made with a wide range of materials to suit the demands of specific environments. Two very useful materials are nitrile and silicone. When you are considering nitrile vs silicone O rings, the choice is not always obvious. They are used in some very similar applications. For example, both are used widely in the automotive industry and inflatable seals can be made with both materials. While they have some similarities, each has its own strengths. When you must decide between nitrile vs. silicone O rings, it helps to understand the benefits of each.

How to Choose NBR O-Ring

1. Application Requirements

Every food and beverage processing or pharmaceutical manufacturing plant uses various types of chemicals, oils, and flavors. In addition to this, there are several equipment involved across the supply chain. So, you must have knowledge about the fluids, chemicals, or oils that the NBR O-ring will come into contact with. In addition to this, you must address the operating conditions of your system, such as the maximum pressures and temperatures your system may be exposed to and so on.

2. Material Selection

Choose a material that meets the FDA approval for food contact. A few common materials for food contact include:Silicone Rubber: This material is known for its low compression set characteristics and flexibility retention. It can be operated across the widest temperature range.

3. Pressure Resistance

Determine the range of pressures that an NBR O-ring can withstand. It is essential as it ensures the NBR O-ring doesn't extrude or fail under high-pressure conditions. The pressure resistance helps maintain the seal integrity, prevent seal failure and extrusion, ensure system reliability, address safety considerations, and promote longevity and cost savings.

4. Size and Dimensions

It is essential to measure the NBR O-ring's inner diameter (ID), outer diameter (OD), and cross-sectional diameter (CS). In addition to this, you must also measure the groove's dimensions before the NBR O-ring is placed in it. This helps avoid leaks or mitigate inefficiencies. The NBR O-ring needs to fit firmly inside the groove to create a reliable seal.

5. Hardness and Durometer

NBR o-rings are available in different hardness levels, typically measured using the Shore A or Shore D scales. Hardness determines the NBR O-ring's resistance to deformation under pressure. Choosing the correct hardness and durometer helps ensure proper sealing performance, durability, and overall functionality of the NBR O-rings. Therefore it is important to select the appropriate hardness level based on the application's specific needs.

Properties of Buna (Nitrile) O-Rings

While o-rings might seem simple, they are a product of advanced material science and precise manufacturing techniques. Buna o-rings, known as Nitrile o-rings, are made from synthetic rubber-Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR). The term “Buna” is derived from Bu (Butadiene) and Na (Sodium-the polymerization agent).

Buna o-ringsunique properties result from their chemical composition, specifically the co-polymerization of butadiene and acrylonitrile. By altering the proportions of these two components, manufacturers gain control over specific properties. For instance, a higher acrylonitrile content will increase resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels, while a lower range improves low-temperature performance.

Various industries celebrate Buna o-rings because of their excellent resistance to oils, fuels, silicone greases, hydraulic fluids, and certain alcohols. These rings also resist damage from compression set, tearing, and abrasion, promising an extended and efficient service life compared to many other materials. This robust performance profile renders Buna highly versatile and suitable for various applications where durability, flexibility, and resistance are paramount. Check out our interactive chemical compatibility tool to check if Buna is resistant to a specific chemical.

Among Buna's standout attributes is its impressive tensile strength, which generally falls between 1000 to 3000 PSI. Furthermore, Buna exhibits an elongation percentage of 200 to 400. This flexibility enables Buna o-rings to maintain a solid seal while offering enough elasticity to install them in various configurations. How to Maintain NBR O-Ring

Do use compressed air or a soft brush
Frequently cleaning the rings is a vital part of maintenance. This is especially important for NBR O-Ring that provide a seal to machines. If you find any debris, grit, or contamination, you should clean it using a soft brush to avoid abrasions.Additionally, if there are any signs of corrosion or cracks on the ring, you must look for a replacement as using a broken NBR O-Ring can lead to major defects.

Do lubricate regularly
O-rings need substantial lubrication to function correctly. If not, cracks can occur and ultimately cause severe damage. This is especially significant for machines that require seals to be opened and closed. For this instance, you can use any silicone-based NBR O-Ring lubricant like WEICON Silicone Grease and apply the necessary amount.

Do be familiar with other maintenance products
Remember, there are various kinds of NBR O-Ring made for different purposes. They can be Neoprene, Viton, or NBR-based rings. What you need will determine the type of NBR O-Ring you should buy. Simplex offers O-rings made from various materials such as silicone, Viton, and nitrile rubber.Additionally, you may need products like adhesives and sealants while maintaining your NBR O-Ring. Sealants block fluids between spaces, while adhesives bind two parts together.

Do store it properly
Knowing how to store NBR O-Ring is just as important as applying them. You should keep them in an airtight bag, away from sunlight. Using old NBR O-Ring can lead to severe consequences, so it is always better to be safe.Additionally, the rings could get brittle over time. If that happens, it is best to check out suppliers like Simplex for new ones.

Don't stretch out the ONBR O-Ring
It is crucial to apply NBR O-Ring carefully, as improper care can result in significant damage. Stretching the NBR O-Ringg can cause detrimental effects such as abrasions, degradation, and flattening. These NBR O-Ring failures can lead to costly repairs, as they can also damage other components that you may need to replace. You must understand the application of your NBR O-Ring, as well. We likewise recommend that you do some evaluation before buying a specific product to save you from wasted purchases and ensure that you are correctly applying the NBR O-Ring.

Don't use tools with sharp edges
You should avoid using tools with pointy tips or sharp edges while working with NBR O-Ring. Sharp tools can easily damage the NBR O-Ring and affect its sealing capability. These tools must be handled with care and, depending on the application, can cause severe issues. If you need to remove and install NBR O-Ring, remember to slide, not roll. Use your fingers to slowly squeeze it sideways until you can push one edge out from its recess. Continue doing so carefully until you have removed the NBR O-Ring. Once you are done, clean the NBR O-Ring the area around it. Discard any debris or grease and check for cracks or corrosion.
