Two trimming methods for special-shaped seals

When special-shaped seals are vulcanized, the rubber can immediately fill the entire mold cavity. However, because the filled rubber needs to have a certain amount of interference, the excess rubber often flows out along the parting surface, resulting in different thicknesses of rubber edges in different parts. Today we will briefly introduce two trimming methods.

Because the product itself has relatively strict requirements on quality and appearance, and its function is sealing, if the product has rubber edges, it may cause the sealing performance to decrease, so the finished product after vulcanization often needs to be trimmed.

The process of removing excess rubber edges is trimming. Trimming also has difficulty. Generally speaking, the smaller the size of the product and the more complex the structure, the higher the difficulty of trimming and the more working hours consumed.

There are two methods of trimming: one is manual trimming and the other is mechanical trimming. Let's introduce them in detail below.

Manual trimming is a more traditional trimming method, that is, using a tool to slowly trim the excess rubber edge along the outer edge of the product. If the manual trimming is not done skillfully, it may damage the entire product and cause the entire product to be scrapped. Therefore, this method requires a very high level of manual proficiency.

The manual trimming investment is relatively small, but the trimming quality is not high and the efficiency is relatively low. Nowadays, manual trimming is rarely used. It is only used when processing small batches of products.

The mechanical trimming method can be divided into two types, one is grinding with grinding wheel and sandpaper, and the other is low-temperature freezing trimming. At present, the low-temperature freezing trimming method can be divided into five methods: vibration freezing trimming, swinging or shaking freezing trimming, drum freezing trimming, brush grinding freezing trimming and shot blasting freezing trimming.

Since many of the products are produced using rubber, under certain low temperature conditions, the rubber will change from a highly elastic state to a glassy state, thus becoming a glassy rubber, making the material hard and brittle.

The speed at which special-shaped seals harden and become brittle is related to the thickness of the material used.

When the product is placed in the freezing trimming machine, a reasonable low temperature is set to make the thin rubber edge of the product hard and brittle due to freezing, but the whole product still has elasticity.

Grinding with grinding wheel and sandpaper mainly involves putting the vulcanized product on a sanding rod with a matching inner diameter, driving it to rotate by a motor, and removing the unnecessary rubber edge through friction.
