Introduction: Why Material Choice Matters
Rubber gaskets are a critical component in sealing applications across industries such as automotive, chemical processing, food and beverage, and water treatment. The material you choose directly determines a gasket's durability, resistance to chemicals, and performance under temperature or pressure changes.
At Xiamen Jinshun Sealing Technology Co., Ltd., we have specialized in manufacturing precision-engineered rubber gaskets for over 50 years. With decades of experience, we provide ODM, wholesale, and distribution solutions that help international brands maintain reliable sealing performance while meeting strict compliance requirements.
What Are Rubber Gaskets?
Rubber gaskets act as mechanical seals that fill the gap between two mating surfaces. Their purpose is to:
- Prevent fluid or gas leaks
- Block contaminants from entering equipment
- Reduce vibration and noise
- Ensure equipment longevity
Because they are essential for safe and efficient operations, selecting the right gasket material is one of the most important decisions in system design.
Common Rubber Gasket Materials and Their Properties
1. Neoprene (Polychloroprene)
- Properties: Excellent resistance to oils, ozone, UV light, acids, and weathering. Good flexibility and durability.
- Temperature Range: -40°F to +230°F (up to +250°F intermittently).
- Applications: HVAC, refrigeration, outdoor sealing, general industrial use.
- Available Grades at Jinshun: Commercial, medium, high-grade, FDA-approved, PSA-backed, cloth-inserted, neoprene sponge.
2. Nitrile (Buna-N, NBR)
- Properties: Outstanding resistance to petroleum oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, and abrasion. Low gas permeability.
- Temperature Range: -40°F to +212°F.
- Applications: Automotive seals, fuel systems, oil handling, industrial machinery.
- Available Grades at Jinshun: Commercial, high-grade, FDA-approved white nitrile, transformer oil-resistant, bio-diesel nitrile, nitrile sponge.
3. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)
- Properties: Excellent resistance to weathering, steam, water, ozone, acids, and alkalis. Long service life outdoors.
- Temperature Range: -40°F to +250°F (up to +275°F intermittently).
- Applications: Roofing, outdoor equipment, water sealing, steam handling.
- Available Grades at Jinshun: Commercial, peroxide-cured, FDA-approved, EPDM sponge.
4. Silicone Rubber
- Properties: Exceptional flexibility at extreme temperatures, UV and ozone resistant, non-toxic.
- Temperature Range: -75°F to +500°F.
- Applications: Food and beverage, medical, electronics, aerospace, high-temperature environments.
- Available Grades at Jinshun: Commercial, medical-grade (USP Class VI), FDA-approved, fluorosilicone, flame-retardant, conductive silicone, fiberglass-reinforced, silicone sponge/foam.
5. Viton® (Fluoroelastomer)
- Properties: Premium resistance to chemicals, solvents, and high temperatures. Excellent tensile strength and compression resistance.
- Temperature Range: -15°F to +400°F (up to +500°F intermittently).
- Applications: Aerospace, automotive fuel systems, chemical processing, oil and gas.
- Available Grades at Jinshun: Viton A, B, F, Extreme, FDA-approved, sponge.
6. Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR, Red Rubber)
- Properties: Cost-effective, good abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and flexibility.
- Temperature Range: -67°F to +180°F.
- Applications: General-purpose sealing, flanged gaskets, low-pressure applications.
- Available Grades at Jinshun: Commercial, premium, specification-grade (red/black), nylon-inserted SBR.
7. Butyl Rubber
- Properties: Superior impermeability to gases and moisture. High resistance to ozone, aging, and acids.
- Temperature Range: -60°F to +250°F.
- Applications: Gas and air sealing, chemical resistance applications, weatherproofing.
- Available Options at Jinshun: Various grades, thicknesses, hardness, with or without adhesive backing.
8. Natural Rubber (NR, Gum Rubber)
- Properties: Excellent tensile strength, flexibility, abrasion resistance, and moldability.
- Temperature Range: -60°F to +175°F.
- Applications: Shock absorption, vibration damping, mechanical wear protection.
- Available Grades at Jinshun: Black commercial, premium gum (red), light tan, protein-free, FDA-approved.
9. Cloth-Inserted Rubber
- Properties: Reinforced with fabric (cotton, nylon, fiberglass) for higher dimensional stability and tear resistance.
- Applications: High-compression and heavy-duty sealing environments.
- Available Options at Jinshun: Cloth-inserted neoprene, nitrile, and EPDM.
10. Polyurethane Rubber
- Properties: Combines elasticity with superior toughness and abrasion resistance. Outperforms many plastics and metals in durability.
- Temperature Range: -60°F to +180°F.
- Applications: Heavy machinery, mining, food industry, high-wear sealing.
- Available Options at Jinshun: Multiple hardness levels, colors, FDA-approved polyurethane.
11. Food-Grade (FDA Approved) Rubber
- Properties: Non-toxic, tasteless, odorless, bacteria-resistant, safe for direct food and beverage contact.
- Applications: Food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical equipment, water purification systems.
- Available Materials at Jinshun: FDA-approved EPDM, neoprene, nitrile, and silicone.
How to Select the Right Rubber Gasket Material
When choosing a gasket material, consider:
- Chemical compatibility: Will it resist the fluids or gases it seals against?
- Temperature range: Can it perform under your system's operating conditions?
- Pressure and mechanical load: Does it provide sufficient compression strength?
- Industry compliance: Does it meet FDA, USP, or other industry standards if required?
- Cost efficiency: Is it optimized for both performance and budget?
