How to measure a rubber O-Ring

May 27, 2024 Leave a message

Although O-rings already have standardized production specifications, many users require customized versions due to special needs. It is essential to verify whether the product's dimensions meet usage requirements. So, how do you measure an O-ring's size? Today, we'll introduce two methods.

The tools for measuring O-ring dimensions can be selected based on customer requirements. Generally, measurement methods fall into two categories: dark light measurement and bright light measurement.

1. Dark Light Measurement

This method involves measuring the product's shadow using a projector. Typically, the outer diameter (OD) and inner diameter (ID) are measured. During measurement, the diameter must be checked at the top, bottom, left, and right points of the product. The following steps apply to both OD and ID measurements:

1. On the projector, adjust the lens magnification according to the product's size and ensure the image is clear.

2. Align the coordinates with one edge of the product, keeping them close to the projector's coordinate lines.

3. Locate the circular icon on the projector's interface. Press this icon to confirm and mark the first point.

4. Move the coordinates to another point on the product and repeat the process. Measure four points to determine a single diameter.

2. Bright Light Measurement

This method measures the product directly, usually using an optical image-measuring instrument. The specific steps are similar to those for projector-based measurement and can be adapted as needed.

Conclusion

To measure an O-ring's size, choose between dark light measurement or bright light measurement based on your available tools and testing conditions.
